Words often confused


There are some words that confuse us while using them, We are not sure which one is correct. 




Let's know about some of them:

1. accept (verb) - to agree to take.
    I accept your challenge.
    except ( preposition) - with the exclusion of
    Every child except Nora was present there.

2. advice ( noun) -  an  opinion offered as  a guide to action
    She gave me good advice.
    
    advise  ( verb) -  to give counsel
       I advised him to work hard.

3.angel-(noun)- a messenger of God
     Abou Ben Adhem saw an angel in his dream.

    angle-(noun) the space between two lines or surfaces that meet,measured in degrees
       A right angle has ninety degrees

4. birth( noun) -  an act of being born
    What is your date of birth?
  
     berth( noun)-  a bed on a train.
     They got two berths reserved in the Deccan Express.

5. brake( noun)-  a device for slowing a vehicle 
    The bus driver applied the brake in time.
  
    break( verb)-  to divide into parts
    We should not break the law.

6.bail ( noun)    security
    The accused was released on bail.

     bale (noun)    bundle 
     Some bundles of cotton are lying on the platform.

7. cite (verb) -  to quote
     He cited many examples to prove his point.
    
     sight (noun) - view
     The thief soon disappeared from sight.

8. complement (verb)-  that which completes
    The color of her dress and her purse complement each other.
   
    compliment (noun)-  to express regards
    She got many compliments on her nice dance performance.

 9. coarse(adj.)    rough
     Some people like to wear garments made of coarse cloth.

     course( noun)  - path
     The river is changing its course.

10. dose (noun)-  a quantity of medicine to be taken at one time.
    The doctor asked him to take three doses of that medicine daily.
  
     doze (noun) - to sleep lightly
      My mother was dozing while watching television.

11  dairy(noun)    -a company which sells milk, butter,curd etc.
       We buy milk from a government dairy.

        diary(noun)  - a book in which you write down things some important things
        We should not read anyone's personal diary.

12  feat(verb)     - an action that shows great skill or courage
      The pilot amazed everyone with his daring feats.

      feet(noun)  - the lowest part of the body at the end of leg, on which a person /animal stands

       Tight shoes have caused blisters on her feet.

 13 heal(verb)  - to cure
      Deep wounds take longer to heal. 

      heal(noun)   - the back part of the human foot below the ankle
      The heel of this shoe is completely worn out.  

14. later (adverb)- comparative degree of 'late': suggests time
    Rita reached the airport later than her sister.  
  
     latter (adjective)- suggests a position
     Rohit and Raja are brothers; the latter of the two dances are better.

15.loose(adj.)- not tight

     She prefers to wear loose clothes.

     lose(verb) - to become unable to find something

        Where did you lose your cricket bat?

16.. pray (verb)-  to offer praise, thanks, etc.( to God or somebody)
     We should pray to God every day.
   
     prey( noun)- victim
     The fox fell prey to the lion.

17. plain- not pretty

     She is a plain -looking female.

     plane-  a flat, level surface
                  - aircraft

     This house is at higher plane.
     They will be boarding the plane soon.

18. Principal( noun)- head of an institution
      My aunt is the Principal of this school.
    
     principle (noun)- a basic rule
     We should not give up our principles.

19. quite (adverb)-   entirely
      I am quite well.

      quiet( adjective)- silent
       Keep quiet all of you.
    
20. sore (adjective)-   painful
       She was suffering from a sore throat.
       
       soar( verb)- to fly high
       The kite soared over the treetops.

21. steal (verb)- to take something without permission
      The thief could not steal anything from our house.
      
      steel (noun)- a modified form of iron (a metal)
      Steel is a very useful metal.

22. their (pronoun)- belonging to them
      This is their house.
    
      there (adverb)-  in or at that place
      We went there to meet them.   

23. vain ( adjective)- fruitless
      All his efforts to top the class proved vain.
    
     vein (noun)- a blood vessel
      The veins carry de-oxygenated blood in our bodies.

24. rain( noun)- the drops of water that fall from the sky
       I love to get wet in the open rain.
       
      reign (noun)   rule
      People were happy during the Akbar's reign?

25. invent (verb)- to make a new thing
      Charles Babbage invented the computer.
     
      discover (verb)- find out something which is already there
      Madame Curie discovered radium.

26. drown (verb)-   to die in water (used for human beings)
     Two boys got drowned in the sea.      

     sink (verb) - to go down under the surface of liquid (used for non-living things)
     The ship sank but some passengers were rescued.

27.  die (verb) to stop living
      Many people die because of fatal diseases every year..
    
      dye (noun)-to make something a different colour
       That shirt was dyed red.   
     
      
28. weather (noun)- a state of the atmosphere.
      Today, the weather is fine.
    
     whether (conjunction)- used to introduce the first of two/more alternatives.
     They are not sure whether they will be able to visit his place today.

29.root(noun) underground part of a plant
    The root of this old tree must be very deep.
   
     route (noun)-a way from one place to another
          His school bus does not go by that route.

30.waste( adj.) to use something in careless way
          We should not waste the time.

    waist(noun) -the narrowest part around the middle of our body
              He has a big waist.
